Anatomy of a Grinding wheel

There are number of ‘standard’ shapes as designated by FEPA (Federation of European Producers of Abrasives) which have helped to harmonise the descriptions of the different wheels produced by manufacturers.

 

Core Shapes

This refers to the body of the grinding wheel itself.  The diagrams are drawn as a cross section through the centre of the wheel.

The common wheel shapes used in our range are:

The shape code is maintained as the same regardless of the abrasive used or the location of the abrasive or the application used for the wheel.
Dimensions or modifications of the body of the wheel does not affect this shape code.

 

Shape of the abrasive section

This refers to the shape of the abrasive rim used on the grinding wheel.  There are many different shapes available, each one is more suited to a certain type of application.
The abrasive shape does not change regardless of its location or the abrasive used.

Of these shapes the most common within the Quinirus range are;

A – Used in many of the Top and Side Grinding wheels.

AA – The ‘Gemini’ where two different abrasive rims are placed next to each other for different grinding effect, the first often for stock removal, the second to provide a polished finish.

 

AAA – where 3 different abrasive rims are used.  The first often contains a coarse grit for maximum stock removal, the second a medium grit to smooth out the grind marks left by the first, and finally a fine grit to provide a polished finish.

 

 

F – Used predominantly for side grinding these have a convex arc for profile grinding

V – an angled abrasive edge, often used for ‘face’ type applications where the protruding abrasive rim can access narrow gaps without causing the body of the wheel to impact the workpiece.
The ‘Ferret’ wheel is a highly specific and modernised ‘V’ shaped grinding wheel, designed specifically for narrow gullet saw blades and other similar engineering applications.

 

The Location of the Abrasive Section

 This determines where on the body the abrasive is mounted.  There are 10 options within FEPA, however the three main locations used within our Quirinus range are listed below

125 – Diameter of the wheel (mm)
5 – Width of Abrasive Section (mm)
3 – Depth of Abrasive Section (mm)
32 – Bore size (mm)
D – Diamond Grit Size, (B – CBN Grit Size)
C – Concentration of Diamond, (V – Concentration  of CBN)
